What Does Full Coverage Auto Insurance Include in Georgia?
"Full coverage" is one of the most commonly used — and most misunderstood — phrases in auto insurance. Here is the truth: it is not an official policy type. No insurer sells a product called "full coverage." What most people mean when they say it is a combination of three separate coverages bundled together.
Here is what each one does, and where the gaps are.
The Three Core Coverages
Liability is the only coverage Georgia law requires. It pays for the other driver's injuries and property damage when you are at fault. Georgia's minimum limits are $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident / $25,000 property damage — low enough that a single serious accident can exceed them. Most agents recommend at least 100/300/100.
Collision pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a crash, regardless of fault. It comes with a deductible (typically $500–$1,000) and is almost always required by lenders if you are financing or leasing.
Comprehensive covers non-collision damage — theft, vandalism, hail, flooding, fire, and animal strikes. North Georgia sees significant hail and deer collisions, making this coverage especially valuable in this region.
What "Full Coverage" Does NOT Include
This is where drivers get caught off guard:
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) — Georgia has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country. If one of them hits you, your liability coverage does not help you. UM/UIM fills that gap and is worth adding to every policy.
- Medical Payments (MedPay) — Your own medical bills after an accident are not covered unless you add MedPay. Health insurance picks up some of it, but co-pays and deductibles add up fast.
- Rental Reimbursement — If your car is in the shop after a claim, you are on your own for a rental unless you have added this endorsement.
- Gap Insurance — If your car is totaled and you owe more than it is worth, gap insurance covers the difference. Critical in the first few years of a new loan.
The Bottom Line
Having liability, collision, and comprehensive is a solid foundation — but it is not a complete safety net. The right coverage depends on your vehicle, your finances, and how much risk you are comfortable carrying.
